Inspiration LED

I had to discover that Youtube has an impressive amount of video about Led matrix project and Arduino.

One of the first video I came across was:

Input/output led matrix

One panel is used as an input such as a touch screen, and the other Matrix recreate the data. At that stage I would not call it Art, but this idea could be devolved in something a bit more…. wild


Multi-touch Sensing through LED Matrix Displays

Using Led Matrix as a sensor is a very interesting idea., here again I found a lot of projects on Youtube, but this one kept my attention. I am not really sure about how it works, but the effect o the monitor is pretty cool. Mixing light and 3D graphic….I am sure we could use `Processing to create the graphic, but wondering what has been use to turn the Led Matrix to a touch sensor???? Investigation needed…anyone out there knows?



This one is pretty cool, and that could be fantastic if we could implement this idea in our group project. The random light on the Led matrix would make a very nice effect with the RGB patch. Nevertheless in this example the Matrix is responding to the input through processing, so if we try that we will need to adapt the code for our need.

 3D Borg

Led cube, or 3D cube seems amazingly popular in YouTube, however my favourite and most impressive one is the Borg3D color. This project is a 3-dimensional cube consisting of 5x5x5 RGB LEDs and it is obviously controlled by a microcontroller…But is it Art? I will say no as the author was mainy driven by technology, but the visual is real delight for my eyes.

Led Cube

Here another very interesting project using Led cube as a 3D display. Unfortunately there is not much detail about how it has done and what is really the final result, but the concept in a way simple  and on the other hand fantastic. Another example of simplicity but I am sure very complicated to archive.







Erwin Redl

Of course I cannot omit to mention this artist Erwin Redl, especially with the Matrix Series. Each version consist of a different large-scale demonstration of the typical grid structure. The LED components used in those pieces became the idle medium to convert the lingo of virtual reality and 3-D computer modeling into an sensual architectural installations. The way his work has been presented, participating by simply being ‘present’ seems to be, or even is an integral part of the installations.

It looks like being inside a virtual world, but I am wondering what the viewer can feel or think at that precise moment. This would be quite interesting to know, unfortunately I could not found any information..




“Starlight” by James Clar.


In the same kind of vision I found this artefact “Starlight”.

This interactive lightning designer and installation artist merges technology and art to create new visual systems. In this particular piece some motors are attached to the each LED grids, causing the LED stars to wiggle and shake and generating a trails light effect.  The spectator is viewing a sky full of shooting stars. Well some nice light effects.

ut this group of artist have a big range of artefacts using light such as 3D LED cube etc….. It is worthy to shake that site…for some ideas….

jim Campbell

San Francisco-based artist Jim Campbell is widely known to be one of the most extraordinary and important artists working with new media. His installations have pioneered new ways of showing images, from LED screens to touch-sensitive computers. He uses digital media in the service of profound humanism.

I just found a new piece from him of the Internet, this new work consists of a grid of 192 white LED’s that blink on and off in a pattern that creates a moving image. 192 Led (use as pixel) contain such a low resolution that in theory we should not be able to understand the images we see at all. However our brain is filling in the gaps of the missing information and produces meaning. Campbell is interested in how or why we understand the things we understand.

My project idea was quiet similar to that, with obviously a different meaning. I definitely like his work.

This artist uses the light as a primary medium to create mesmerizing sculpture, not just a component. Dan Flavin pioneered light sculpting with this minimalism fluorescent tube, or even James Turell’s mood-altering neon environment, but this new generation of artist took a step ahead an realise some wonder. He was definitely inspired by Flavin. if I had money I will definitely buy one of those light sculpture, or do some DIY….. After all he is only using basic Leds colors (RGB) and manipulate them by digital coding (Heum…..not sure about this part)







DIY Tengu on a breadboard

What is Tengu? A little cutie little Led Matrix.

It is a small little smilly face made of LED who reacts to music. I found it very appealing indeed. And here is the link to the tutorial.


Arduino with Led Matrix controlled by a video cam

If I go ahead with a LED Matrix project connected with a video cam, this tutorial is idle and will help to develop nicely the artefact. 


Make a pocket Led Cube

Right now I do not plan to create an project based on Led cube or 3D Led display, but in a near future  that would be interesting and valuable to look into it.
